A very very very busy day (or two)
Jan. 31st, 2005 01:12 amThe past have been far too "interesting"
for poor widdle me.
The ice storm really did come and kicked us around a bit.
I spend Friday night not sleeping at all.
Ice storms have made me into a big sissy since the time
one sent a huge tree branch through the bathroom ceiling .
So the dogs were forced to stay up with me while I waited for
daylight.
By 5 am the local tv stations went wall to wall
with STORM COVERAGE . Watching the endless footage
of sliding cars and road closings did not improve my mood .
I confirmed that R's flight was coming in even though
the airport was canceling flights by the dozens.
So I began the 1 1/2 hour process of scraping the truck and steeling
myself. The husband surprised me by answering the cell when I called
to leave a message. The plane had actually arrived 30 minutes early.
So off I went .
It was not as bad as I thought. It was quite scary indeed on the bridges,
though. I called R as I pulled up and discovered that there was a problem
with the luggage. So I had to park instead of my usual loitering at the curb.
The parking lot gates were frozen half open , effectively
locking us all out. The next set of lots did work and I was able to
slide into a place.
I waited for 50 more minutes. The reason why?
The plane , after being stopped at the gate and being hooked
up to the walkway, slid forward on the ice . This tore the outside
door completely off ! This , no doubt , sacred the hell out of the passengers
who were unloading at the time. No one was hurt but Jesus! Can you
imagine? This brought all other activity to a complete halt while they all kind
of stood around in a stupefied state. But he did finally get his bag and
we made it home.
We spent the evening watching the ice , snow or sleet come down.
It was the weirdest combination of weather I remember seeing.
Our only saving grace was that there was very little wind.
The temp never left the 20's so the ice just built up as the
hours went by.
The power was coming and going and by 9:30 it gave up the ghost.
We lit candles and waited. After an hour we or so we went to bed.
Just as I was tucking in it came back on!
This time around, I love Georgia Power!
By 7:30 am branches began falling. We were VERY lucky .
Three big ones feel in the back yard. Two hit the back deck ,
missing the house by about 7 ft or so. I had one brass planter
crunched and the rail knocked a little askew.
Not bad at all. We kept the dogs in and away from the falling
ice shards. By 1 in the afternoon all the trees were clear.
I wish all ice storms went like this. We even didn't lose the cable
or the DSL connection .
I have joined the legions. My computer bud helped me to
tweak my router so that my bittorent client now works .
Does any one know where I might find some episodes
of the USA version of Touching Evil ? It's not available
to buy in any form that I know off.
Any leads would be greatly appreciated.
Off to bed for me ,
